PTC - Windchill

"Our objective is to be a leading example of how Windchill can accelerate information flow within an organization to help it meet its business objectives," said Steven C. Walske, PTC's chairman and chief executive officer.

PTC, (Parametric Technology Corporation), founded in 1985 and headquartered in Waltham, MA, develops, markets, and supports integrated solutions for Collaborative Product Commerce (CPC) that assist companies in driving innovation and achieving sustained competitive advantage. PTC's software solutions are complemented by the experience of its Professional Services Organization, which provides training, consulting, and support to customers worldwide. PTC has attained its industry-leading position on the strength of its product strategy, employees, and its relationships with customers. The company is also at the forefront of implementing its leading-edge Windchill technology to improve internal communication among its employees and partners to provide rapid, consistent access to information.

Streamlining Worldwide Operations and Reducing Time to Market

PTC operates globally, and its aggressive product delivery schedules require that cross-functional teams, including Engineering, Marketing, and Sales be able to locate and access the most current versions of documents and files to fuel collaboration and faster time to market.

To streamline its operations, PTC is focusing on several electronic document management initiatives at team and departmental levels. Any new tool had to be both powerful and flexible to support its worldwide operations and the company's unique processes. PTC required a robust information, process, and lifecycle management solution that would be easy for anyone to use and be scalable to meet additional needs over time as new groups join and new business needs arise.

To meet such tough requirements, PTC needed a solution that was developed from the ground up to support the demands of engineering-driven companies. To no one's surprise, PTC turned to Windchill, its enterprise-wide Collaborative Product Commerce (CPC) solution. "Our objective is to be a leading example of how Windchill can accelerate information flow within an organization to help it meet its business objectives," said Steven C. Walske, PTC's chairman and chief executive officer. "In an economy where ideas are as valuable as physical goods, we want to capture the best ideas of our employees and accelerate their implementation throughout our worldwide organization."

The Windchill technology is Web-centric, which makes information management easy for users and administrators because tasks can be performed directly from users' existing Web browsers, on a corporate intranet or extranet and on the Internet. This flexibility and ease-of-use will serve as the foundation to bring partners, suppliers, and customers easily into the enterprise information system without compromising security, accessibility, or operating efficiency.

Windchill Brings the Web's Ease of Use to PTC's Information Management Environment

In 1998, PTC began deploying its Windchill-based business information environment. PTC is rolling out Windchill on an ongoing basis within its Development, Marketing, Sales, and Services organizations.

Company management wanted to treat PTC's Windchill implementation as a standard customer deployment, and utilize PTC's technical support and customer interaction processes. PTC's Professional Services Organization (PSO) supplied process expertise, program management, and technical personnel. IT added new servers to its suite of systems and devoted staffing to the initiative.

The initial rollout of PTC's Windchill implementation focused on exploiting the document management capabilities within Windchill. The Windchill architecture and interface were designed for ease of use and tuned to match the way users access and use documents, including mission critical information. The implementation needed to be configurable for varying levels of access within PTC, ranging from open to restricted access. It also had to provide access to selected users outside the company.

PTC uses the Windchill Collaboration Factor! to establish the information infrastructure across the enterprise. Using their current browsers, users can scan the Web to take advantage of Windchill's information capabilities. Users are notified of document changes anywhere in the enterprise via an automatically generated email, and the related file information is hyperlinked to the message.

For example, when PTC Marketing makes a change to a specification, the appropriate people in Development can be notified automatically and can respond accordingly. If a maintenance representative wants to learn more about highlights of an upcoming product release, they simply use the search capabilities in PTC's intranet to identify the appropriate sources of that information.

"Our departments are extremely enthusiastic about the benefits of Windchill over our current systems and procedures," said Steve Horan, PTC vice president of information technology. "While we expect to quickly see significant gains in our ability to operate effectively as an international enterprise, our initial Windchill implementation is just the tip of the iceberg."

An Enterprise-Class Workflow Solution to Support Continued Expansion

Since implementing Windchill, PTC has created and deployed a workflow and document management framework to showcase the capabilities of the Windchill solution as well as to use the technology to improve its competitive position. The PTC deployment focuses on real-world business problems, and is being used as a tool in the company's day-to-day operations to improve working practices and to provide for increased communication and feedback to the product development organization. PTC's Windchill deployment also serves to demonstrate Windchill in an enterprise implementation.

The first phase of PTC's Windchill implementation went live in March 1999, and additional implementations will continue on an on-going basis worldwide. Windchill is being deployed on an incremental basis starting with Marketing, Development, G&A, Information Technology, and corporate PTC departments.

The company plans to scale over time to include its entire worldwide operations. With Windchill, PTC is establishing a common repository of information, access control, and data sharing among various departments and teams throughout the company. The company anticipates having more than 5,000 worldwide PTC users, partners, and customers communicating over a secure, easy-to-use, Web-based extended enterprise environment by mid-2000.
